OK, I am just about ready to hit the wall with my head. Sorry for not being 100% Low End, but please bear with me.

iMac 2009 running upgrade to mavericks and Mavericks server. I decided to upgrade it to El Capitan. Something went wrong with the upgrade, produced an upgrade report and stopped. The problem is that the SSD on which Mavericks was installed is not useless. Thank God I have a backup disk, so I boot from that and try to partition the SSD and copy everything over. Well, no way ...I can format/partition it. All kind of stupid errors, either trying with the Disk Utility or with terminal. The SSD contains a OS X Installer partition and I can't do anything with it.

OK, I opened up the iMac, remove the SSD, put it in an USB case, connect it to my MacPro running El Capitan. Disk Utility sees it fine, allows me to partition it and it creates a partition. All is well, I put it in the iMac again (darn, those internal disks, I hate them), clean up the iMac, close it and boot it up from the backup disk. Guess what?

The SSD still contains the OS X Installer partition! How can that be? The disk was formatted fine in El Capitan! Spookie!!!
